Swadharmaacharana – following one’s duty as prescribed enjoined. Let us assume we are serving a patient, if that service is extended without the delicate emotions of compassion in the heart, the service turns irritable. The kind of service becomes burdensome, both to the server and served. Seva devoid of psychological co-operation gives birth to ego. It leads to expectation of similar service for you from the served. Expectation of praise from the served arises in him. When such a thought is attached to karma, it completely changes the very form of that karma. Only when wick and oil are together can we have light. Similarly, when vikarma is added to karma do we turn non-expectant (nishkamma), like a mother’s hand when tending to her child. – Baba
